A natural swimming pool is a self-sustaining ecosystem designed to provide clean, chemical-free water through natural filtration processes. It consists of two main zones: the swimming zone, a clear, plant-free area for swimming, and the regeneration zone, which is planted with aquatic vegetation that reduces nutrient levels and traps particles aiding the purification of the water. The regeneration zone is filled with varying sizes of aggregates, which act as a substrate for beneficial micro-organisms that break down organic matter and filter impurities. These plants and microorganisms work together to absorb nutrients, preventing algae growth and maintaining water clarity. Water is continuously circulated between the two zones using a hydraulic system, which includes pumps to ensure steady water flow through the regeneration zone and any additional biological filters. This flow oxygenates the water and supports the ecosystem’s balance, creating a harmonious, low-maintenance pool that mimics the natural purification processes of lakes and ponds.

Regeneration Area

This shallow area is for your plants to thrive – where your range of flora feed on organic matter and help purify the water. Specific oxygenating, aquatic plant types are chosen for this task and aiding in the prevention of algae growth – examples include: Honwort, Willow Moss, Mares Tail & Water Crowfoot.

Water Plants

Floating plants: Water lilies and other floating plants rooted in the bottom provide shade and protect micro-organisms from UV rays. Aggregates

Lining your important regeneration, non-swimming, shallow zone with specific aggregate materials will help to reduce nutrient levels, working along side the aquatic, oxygen-giving plants to regenerate, circulate and clean the water. Water Flow

Water is pumped from the swimming area into to the shallow regeneration zone, flowing through the range of plant life and bed of gravel.
